ASA 101

ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing ................................. $315 (Prerequisite: None)

This is ASA's introductory course in which you will learn the fundamentals of sailing. It is designed for those who have never sailed or have limited sailing experience.

The fee of the ASA 101 course includes a one time certification fee to enter you into ASA's database, a 1 year ASA membership, a personal online account, and a plastic certification card indicating certification levels.

Class is held from 9AM – 5PM Saturday and Sunday. The Basic Keelboat Sailing class covers a considerable amount of new material, so please read the first 4 chapters of your Sailing Fundamentals textbook and complete the exercises at the end of each chapter. This will increase the pace of the class and enhance your learning experience.

The first day's classroom session is a 1 – 1.5 hour review of the points of sail and knots. The rest of the morning is spent on the boat, usually a Hunter 34' sloop, to introduce the sailing lexicon. For lunch, we have an option:  you may venture out on your own to one of the local downtown restaurants; or as a group, we can set sail to Joe's Crab Shack or Landry's while getting some hands on practice along the way. This is always fun! Then we are off to the bay for active participation with points of sail, tack, jibes, and MOB drills. The last 1 – 1.5 hours is reserved for partial exam completion in the classroom.

Day 2 begins with another session in the classroom. The topics covered are ATONS, Rules of the Road, USCG requirements, ASA recommended equipment, flags & pennants, and various legal issues. Again, if the class desires, we can sail to one of the waterfront restaurants for lunch or break from the group for 1 hour. When class resumes and we are under way, you will demonstrate points of sail, MOB drills, and sailing by the lee. We then return to the classroom to complete the final portion of the exam.
